Historic North Zealand
It is no coincidence that it is called Kongernes Nordsjælland, as North Zealand has historically been the sanctuary of kings. We have 4 beautiful castles, a monastery and a number of ruins for you to visit.
Castles
- Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerød, which is a few minutes’ walk from the square and, in addition to being a beautiful place in itself, also houses the National Historical Museum of National History. The castle is beautifully situated on three small islets in the castle lake in Hillerød. Built by Christian IV in the early decades of the 17th century, Frederiksborg Castle is the largest Renaissance-complex in the Nordic region. It was intended to show the king’s position as a powerful northern European monarch. The luxurious palace is rich in detail and impressive craftsmanship. A visit is a great opportunity to experience the pomp and splendor of the past up close. With its fairytale location in the middle of the castle lake, surrounded by the Baroque garden and the landscaped garden, Frederiksborg Castle is a unique destination with the opportunity for great cultural experiences, garden walks and take a trip in The Little Ferry on the castle lake!
